Kremlin-owned gas giant Gazprom said on Thursday it plunged to a net loss of 629 billion rubles ($6.9 billion) in 2023, its first annual loss in more than 20 years, amid dwindling gas trade with Europe, once its main sales market. Analysts had expected net income of 447 billion rubles, according to Interfax news agency. Gazprom's 2023 loss followed a net profit of 1.2 trillion roubles in 2022. It said on Thursday it made a net loss of 364 billion roubles from sales in 2023, in contrast to a profit of 1.9 trillion roubles in 2022. Its total revenue fell to 8.5 trillion rubles last year from 11.7 trillion in 2022.

A Russian court sided with state-run lender VTB Bank in its efforts to recoup $439.5 million from JPMorgan Chase that the American lender froze in U.S. accounts after the Ukraine invasion. The court ordered the seizure of funds in JPMorgan's Russian accounts and "movable and immovable property," including the bank's stake in a Russian subsidiary, according to a court order published Wednesday. It also boosted an ongoing American effort to convince European allies to release Russian state assets to assist Ukraine. JPMorgan said Russian courts have enabled similar efforts by Russian lenders against American or European banks at least a half dozen other times. JPMorgan said it faced "certain and irreparable harm" from VTB's efforts.

In recent weeks, the Belgorod region has been subject to almost daily shelling and drone attacks. Russian authorities blame Ukraine and report having repelled the attacks, while also admitting destruction and casualties caused by them. The Belgorod region has borne the brunt of the war compared to more distant Russian regions, which have been relatively untouched. The governor of Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said on March 23 that 24 people had been killed and 152 injured in the span of less than two weeks. Following a major air attack on Ukraine by Russia overnight into December 29, Kyiv retaliated a day later by targeting the Belgorod region.

In a Thursday email to clients, the St. Petersburg, Florida-based asset manager said her ARK Venture Fund has invested in OpenAI as of Wednesday. Wood's firm launched the venture fund in September 2022, giving small investors access to the venture capital market with as little as $500 . The widely followed Wood has been a big AI bull, saying it's the most important catalyst in every corner of her disruptive innovation strategy. The toads have to cross the road to reach a lake where they lay their eggs. So, in order to preserve the population, the reserve seeks the help of volunteers every year to help the toads safely reach their spawning grounds. The reserve requires volunteers to complete registration as well as training before they can help the toads cross the road, and it urges citizens who aren’t trained in toad-marshalling not to touch the creatures as this could harm them.

CNN —Russian state media confirmed on Tuesday that the Kremlin replaced the head of the country’s navy following a string of successful Ukrainian attacks on its Black Sea fleet. Moiseyev replaces Adm. Nikolay Yevmenov, according to TASS, whose future had been the subject of speculation for weeks due to Russia’s repeated losses in the Black Sea. Ukraine claimed last month that it had disabled a third of the Russian Black Sea fleet in attacks which have most involved underwater drones. But those losses have prompted the Kremlin to redouble its efforts to fortify the Black Sea Fleet. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu effectively admitted that Ukraine had taken advantage of vulnerabilities in the Black Sea Fleet during a visit to its command post.
